Resources
The resources presented here have evolved over the past 4years. The algorithms attempt to encompass the knowledge, skills and actions required to manage a tracheostomy emergency. The background information document attempts to collect together the pieces of the jigsaw of tracheostomy management. There are multimedia explanations of basic and advanced, routine and emergency care in the multimedia section.

Multi-media Resouces
This section explains how and why we developed our resources and takes you step by step through the management of a patient with a tracheostomy who develops breathing difficulties.

The resources presented here have evolved over the past 4 years. The algorithms attempt to encompass the knowledge, skills and actions required to manage a tracheostomy emergency. The background information document attempts to collect together the pieces of the jigsaw of tracheostomy management which are available, but have tended to be focussed on separate areas such as critical care, surgery, nursing, ward management etc. The text will be hyperlinked to the relevant supporting sections of the site, such as the video resources. The background document will be updated to include information from the NPSA, ICS and other national and local documents to become a 'one stop shop' for all tracheostomy enquiries. We will cover 'just in time' training (eg, you are about to get a tracheostomy patient on your ward and you need a reminder on how to perform correct suction), advanced techniques in airway rescue for the experts and address infrastructure issues such as draft hospital tracheosotmy policies or integrated care pathways which you may wish to adopt. As with all resources on this website, you are welcome to adapt and use locally if you wish. We welcome feedback on all of the content presented here, by clicking the scrolling link below.
A more detailed explanation of the algorithms can be found here.
